I know how you have to live inside yourself, isolate yourself because emotionally and mentally you have no equals here. How, more often than not, you have to compromise your thinking just to be understood. How you long for someone with the capacity to meet you where you live. On your level. (credit: Lawrence Hertzog)

Why the Senate is Wrong...

A thoughtful mind, when it sees a Nation's flag, sees not the flag only, but the Nation itself; and whatever may be its symbols, its insignia, he reads chiefly in the flag the Government, the principles, the truths, the history which
belongs to the Nation that sets it forth.
~ Henry Ward Beecher

He is a poor patriot whose patriotism does not enable him to understand how all men everywhere feel about their altars and their hearthstones, their flag and their fatherland.
~Harry Emerson Fosdick

"The things that the flag stands for were created by the experiences of a great people. Everything that it stands for was written by their lives. The flag is the embodiment, not of sentiment, but of history."

-- Woodrow Wilson
These thirty-four senators have poured the lighter fluid, and lit the match for every terrorist, and enemy of the U.S. to desecrate her flag:
Arkansas: Pryor (D); California: Boxer (D); Connecticut: Dodd (D), Lieberman (D); Delaware: Biden (D), Carper (D); Hawaii: Akaka (D), Inouye (D); Illinois: Durbin (D), Obama (D); Iowa: Harkin (D); Kentucky: McConnell (R); Maryland: Mikulski (D), Sarbanes (D); Massachusetts: Kennedy (D), Kerry (D); Michigan: Levin (D); New Jersey: Lautenberg (D); New Mexico: Bingaman (D); New York: Clinton (D), Schumer (D); North Dakota: Conrad (D), Dorgan (D); Oregon: Wyden (D); Rhode Island: Chafee (R), Reed (D).
Utah: Bennett (R); Vermont: Jeffords (I), Leahy (D); Washington: Cantwell (D), Murray (D); West Virginia: Byrd (D); Wisconsin: Feingold (D), Kohl (D).

As a former Sailor in the United States Navy, I can tell you this one hurt.

Prior to boarding a Naval Vessel, everyone including the Skipper of the ship salutes first the Officer of the Deck, and then the Colors (United States flag).

This is an absolute display of Honor and Respect for the Country in which we serve.

I am sorely disappointed in the individuals who believe Free Speech supersedes the Respect of the country that guarantees Free Speech! It makes absolutely no sense.

Would they consider it a hate crime if we burn pictures of them publicly or would they rejoice in "Free Speech?"

You know what a slippery slope this is. Once we make amendments to protect the flag, people are going to want an amendment for heterosexual marriages, protection of unborn babies and the list goes on.

Once they realize the dems are going soft, then its just work, work, work all the time.

Isn't it heartwarming to see those republicans being tolerant for a change?

Great point Qlinger.

That seems to be the typical rhetoric of the left... "Let's be Tolerant"...

WE are being tolerant. We're letting you stay in this country that you hate so much, and fighting for your right of free speech.

But by allowing the desecration of a piece of cloth that represents the hundreds of thousands of lives that were given in the name of freedom is pathetic and childish!

Burning the flag is nothing more than an outward expression of the inablilty to communicate verbally and intelligently as an adult.

What I'd like to see is that every ceremony attended by one of the 34 Senators opens with someone burning what looks like an American flag, next to a poster saying "Thanks Sen. XXXX for helping me desecrate the flag!"

That's an image that should be in and on everyone's mind everytime they speak.
